Cleaning New Year’s Resolutions to Consider in 2017

As 2016 draws to a close, many of us begin to think about making resolutions to better ourselves in the new year. There are just a few weeks before New Year’s; a perfect time to reflect on 2016 and make plans for the year ahead. Most people focus their resolutions on budgeting and saving money, getting out of debt, or losing weight and eating better. But this is our cleaning blog, so we’ve compiled a great list of several cleaning and organizing related goals you might want to consider this January!

De-Clutter your Home

Out with the old and in with the new, including the mountains of “stuff” you have accumulated all year. This year, resolve to tackle one room at a time and de-clutter it, get rid of things you no longer use or need, recycle old paper waste and take this time to re-organize what you want to keep. This is also the perfect opportunity to help others as well. Consider donating your old stuff to a shelter or charity and turn this cleaning resolution in to one that also allows you to pay it forward.

Create a Cleaning Calendar

Often times people clean when they have time, but there are those select few who have certain days they clean certain rooms, or maybe they do their deep cleaning every week on the same day. We feel most people get more done if it’s planned and organized. Create a weekly cleaning schedule or ritual to get your tasks complete! If a cleaning date each week isn’t your style, you can always resolve to do the dishes right after dinner or start the laundry once you have a full load, and then you’ll never feel like your daily chores have gotten away from you.

Get Organized

This was probably already on your list, right? -We all strive to be more organized. How about just a few tips then on how to do it well! In conjunction with downsizing and de-cluttering, make sure everything has a place. If you have a junk drawer, don’t. Just don’t. Find a spot for everything, even if you must buy extra bins or baskets make sure all things in your home have a home. Once you have your “stuff” in its place, get to labeling. There is something very satisfying about labeling belongings, it’s like creating an inventory for life. This will also help you find things going forward, who wants to be in the attic searching boxes or bins for Valentine’s Day décor and only come up with Halloween decorations?

Be a List Maker

That’s right, make lists, lists of ways to be cleaner, things to organize, or things to buy at the store. Having a list will help you live a saner life in general. List making is a great habit to have and it helps you have a visual guide of your short-term goals. List making also helps prevent you from forgetting to get mayonnaise from the store, again. If you have things to do, write them down, cross them off, and consider each one a step in the right direction for 2017.
