The Right Way to Clean Exterior Windows

You’ve developed quite the cleaning schedule, and have no problem keeping up with your daily and weekly cleaning tasks. Keeping your home clean can be difficult with busy schedules and other daily tasks, but a solid cleaning schedule can keep you on top of things. But what about those cleaning tasks that come along infrequently and can be hard to remember? Outdoor window cleaning is easy to overlook, and many view it as a hassle they don’t want to deal with, but it doesn’t have to be! Here is a simple step by step guide to cleaning your home’s exterior windows, without the headaches and stress:

Start with the Right Tools

Any cleaning job can become more stressful and time consuming if you approach it without the proper tools. Having proper tools is essential for a good, deep cleaning, especially for your outdoor windows. For cleaning your exterior windows you will need a hose, a soft microfiber cloth, a warm water and dish soap (or commercial cleaner) solution, a vinegar and water solution, a bucket, and a squeegee. If you have high windows, you may also need a ladder or a microfiber mop on an extendable pole to reach your second and third level windows.

Steps to a Great Clean

To clean your exterior windows efficiently and well, you’ll first want to begin by hosing down all windows to rinse them off. Next you’ll create a soapy solution using warm water and dish soap (or commercial cleaner) in your bucket. Scrub your windows using this solution with the microfiber cloth or mop. Stubborn stains may need to be saturated with the water/vinegar solution and allowed to set for several minutes, before scrubbing and wiping clean. After you’ve scrubbed your windows to remove any spots, rinse them again with the hose to get any excess soap or vinegar off. Finally, wipe the windows dry using a squeegee for a clean, streak free finish, working in downward strokes. This final step using a squeegee will give your windows a perfectly clean look, and leave you feeling great about the work you put in.

Remember your Screens

When cleaning exterior windows it is easy to forget about your screens, but over time they get dirty and can obstruct your view. To clean screens, remove them from your windows and spray them clean with your vinegar/water solution, and then again with plain water. When you’ve finished washing the screens, be sure to allow them to dry completely before placing them back in your windows. Clean screens along with sparkling windows will give you an unobstructed view to enjoy.
